The Vedas state the natural human lifespan is 100 years. Are your choices, lifestyle, work, coping strategies and everyday habits supporting you to live a long, healthy and happy life, or detracting from it? There is more to health and disease-prevention than our genes, karma or good luck. The Longevity Retreat and Program is your opportunity to learn and integrate the Ayurvedic and Yogic secrets which lead to longevity.

the gift of longevity

Only you can give yourself the gift of longevity. The commitment, daily choices, coping and stress management strategies, and capacity to adapt and survive all flows from within. Regardless of our biological age, there is a wellspring of vibrant vitality and life force with us. There are yogic methods which help us to increase and preserve this life force, and Ayurvedic protocols which help us to decrease accumulated toxins and replenish the digestive and physiological systems.

The Longevity Retreat combines yoga and Ayurveda with focussed lessons on longevity to empower you with information, and facilitated group sessions to decrease the obstacles and resistances to change, and increase your resolve and commitment. This is the greatest gift you can give to yourself. Your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, particularly as you age, has a positive effect not only for your life, but that of your loved ones, your family, social groups, work and communities.

None of us will live forever. However, there are yogic, Ayurvedic, lifestyle and dietary strategies we can all implement to increase our lifespan by preventing or at least delaying the onset of the chronic diseases most us will die from.

The things we die from
Here in Australia the 10 leading causes of death in order of prevalence are: heart disease; stroke; lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ie emphysema); colon and rectum cancers; Alzheimers disease and dementias, respiratory infections, prostate cancer, diabetes, breast cancer.

Most of these disease are considered preventable through our diet, exercise, lifestyle, and stress-management. The early onset and progression of disease are often accelerated by our lifestyles and daily choices. For example the American Heart Association tells us that 90% of cases of heart disease are preventable.

The onset of these diseases is often invisible and generally begins when we are young, with symptoms appearing from midlife (35-65) onwards. Some of us will have genetic predispositions towards one or more of these conditions. Our environment also is a factor, particularly if we are exposed to pollution and chemicals in food and manufacturing processes.

Ayurveda tells us there are 6 stages of chronic disease progression which happen over a period of time.
Ayurveda emphasises early detection and intervention to prevent diseases from progressing through these stages and to promote health and well-being. The 6 stages of disease progression are:
  • Accumulation: Disease starts with the buildup of toxins or imbalances in the body.
  • Aggravation: Imbalances increase, and systems and processes become aggravated due to various factors.
  • Overflow: Imbalances spread throughout the body, affecting different organs.
  • Relocation: Weaker tissues or organs are targeted, causing specific symptoms.
  • Manifestation: Disease becomes fully apparent with distinct symptoms.
  • Diversification: Without intervention, the disease may worsen or affect multiple systems.

Regardless of genetic and environmental factors, each of us has the capacity to manage the conditions within our own bodies and minds so we are resilient and healthy in body, mind and spirit for longer. Many of our daily choices are a support for longevity, and many are not. Our Longevity program is to learn to know the difference and to build better habits, so we can act naturally and effortlessly in daily life upon this knowledge.

True Wellbeing
In the modern world, there are many fads, false claims, procedures and products which supposedly make us younger and delay ageing, or at least make us look younger.
True wellbeing always flows from within and begins with intention, respect and reverence for the natural changes to our bodies & minds through the stages of life.

From this stance of acceptance and appreciation, we make appropriate choices in our daily life which support longevity and not lead us away from it. It might seem an obvious statement, however there are many internal obstacles to making such choices, and the willpower and motivation is not always there.

Wisdom is to accept change and the inevitability of ageing and dying. With this acceptance comes deep gratitude and pleasure for the gifts of each and every stage of life, and a deepening of presence and self-care. We invite you to learn more about our unique Longevity Retreat and Longevity Program to support you to live a longer, healthier and happier life.

ayurveda - longevity medicine

Ayurveda is an ancient holistic healing system originating from India. It emphasises balance in body, mind, and spirit for overall health and well-being. Like yoga, central to Ayurveda is the belief in the interconnectedness of the individual with the environment and the universe. Illness is considered to be an imbalance of the universal elements which combine in the individual to create a unique constitution which consists of the doshas - vata, pitta, kapha. It utilises natural remedies, herbal treatments, detoxification procedures, rejuvenation therapies, diet, and lifestyle modifications to prevent illness, restore health and promote longevity.

Given our unique constitution, the Ayurvedic approach to healing and health is always personalised to the individual. It is a skilled practitioner who can determine your innate constitution and the therapies and interventions needed to restore balance and health. Daily rituals, known as Dinacharya, and seasonal routines, are also integral to Ayurvedic practices, aiming to establish routines that support vitality and resilience.

Ayurveda encompasses several main areas that form the foundation of its holistic approach to health and well-being:
  1. Elements and Doshas: Ayurveda believes that the universe and human beings are composed of five elements - Air, Water, Space, Earth, Fire (Vayu, Jala, Aakash, Prithvi, and Agni) - which in humans combine into three elemental doshas - Air/Ether, Fire/Water, Water/Earth (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) in unique proportions. Each dosha has specific qualities and tendencies. Our constitution is categorised according to the unique balance of doshas.
  2. Treatment Modalities: Ayurvedic treatment is personalised to our unique combination of doshas and includes internal purification processes, special diets, herbal remedies, massage therapy, yoga, and meditations.
  3. Principles of Health: Ayurveda emphasises maintaining the natural balance of the doshas to maintain health, while addressing imbalance before it leads to illness.
Lifestyle Recommendations: Ayurveda provides guidance on diet, daily routines, and seasonal practices to promote health and prevent diseases.
  4. Attributes: Ayurveda recognises three basic attributes—satva, rajas, and tamas (peace/clarity; movement/desire; inertia; stillness) —that influence mental and spiritual well-being.

These areas collectively form the basis of Ayurvedic philosophy and practice, aiming to achieve harmony between the body, mind, and spirit for optimal health and longevity. There are two main treatment approaches in Ayurveda - detoxification and rejuvenation.

Rasayana therapies are the rejuvenation treatments in Ayurveda aimed at promoting longevity, vitality, and overall well-being. These therapies are designed to enhance the body's resistance against disease and aging, offering a holistic approach to health maintenance. Rasayana therapies aim to promote vitality, enhance immunity, and slow down the aging process. These therapies typically include a combination of massage therapies, herbal medicines, dietary recommendations based on an individual's dosha (body type), and Ayurvedic daily routines. Rasayana therapy is believed to be effective in treating various ailments such as fatigue, memory loss, digestive disorders, skin issues, and promoting overall health.

the ayurvedic detox

While we might associate Ayurveda with relaxing massages and pleasant rejuvenation treatments, the cleansing protocols are of equal, and possibly greater, importance. On this retreat you will most definitely enjoy pleasurable relaxation therapies alongside the cleansing rejuvenative protocols.

Panchakarma therapy, a cornerstone of Ayurveda, encompasses various processes aimed at rejuvenating the body, cleansing it of impurities, and enhancing longevity. Rooted in ancient wisdom, Panchakarma applies a holistic approach to promote overall well-being, including longevity. Through practices like detoxification, balancing of bodily energies (doshas), and rejuvenation therapies, Panchakarma supports the body's natural ability to heal and maintain health.

Additionally, Ayurvedic Rasayanas and lifestyle recommendations further contribute to enhancing longevity and overall vitality.

The Longevity Retreat incorporates both Panchakarma and Rasayana therapies as appropriate to each individual. By addressing the root causes of imbalance and promoting optimal health, Panchakarma plays a vital role in supporting longevity and fostering a state of holistic well-being.

Panchakarma involves five cleansing actions to detoxify the body and restore balance. One or more of these procedures may be appropriate and prescribed for you. Please note that some of these (such as blood letting) are not used or recommended anymore. Panchakarma include:
  1. Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis): Induced vomiting to eliminate toxins from the upper body.
  2. Virechana (Purgation): Controlled purgation to cleanse the intestines and eliminate waste].
  3. Basti (Enema Therapy): Medicated enemas to remove toxins and balance the doshas (bioenergies).
  4. Nasya (Nasal Administration): Nasal administration of herbal oils or powders to cleanse and rejuvenate the head and neck region.
  5. Rakta Mokshana (Blood Letting): Blood purification through various methods, though it's less commonly practiced today.

Please see the list below for a list of comprehensive panchakarma treatments you may receive as part of the Longevity Retreat. Panchakarma aims to remove accumulated toxins, improve bodily functions, and promote overall wellness. Rest, avoiding busy and stressful scenarios, quietness and attunement to the body's responses and needs are required for Panchakarma.

It is not always easy to undertake a process such as this, which is why our retreat is located in a luxurious, dedicated facility faraway from the usual stresses and responsibilities, where everyone is here for the same reason - to heal, to be well, to unlock the secrets and potential for a long, happy and healthy life.

Your treatment will include various procedures such as body massage, internal purification treatments like Snehapanam and Nasyam, medicated purgatives, herbal enemas, herbal steam baths, and internal herbal medicines. These procedures work together to detoxify the body, balance energies, and promote overall health and well-being.

Your treatment program will vary depending upon your constitution, state of health, aims and the consulting doctor's recommendations. The treatments your Ayurvedic doctor may prescribe for you are listed here:
  • Abhyangam (Body Massage): This therapy involves the application of medicated oil and cream by two masseurs using hand and foot techniques. It aims to rejuvenate the mind, body, and soul, toning up the skin and strengthening all bodily systems for optimal health and longevity. The massage lasts for 90 minutes to 2 hours.
  • General Massage (Head and Body Massage): general massage of the head and body, likely using traditional massage techniques to relax muscles, relieve tension, and promote overall well-being.
  • Marma Massage: traditional Ayurvedic massage technique aimed at sustaining the flow of energy throughout the body. It targets vital points or "marma points" to balance energy and promote health.
  • Reflexology Massage (Foot and Palm): focuses on the feet and palms, using reflexology techniques to stimulate specific points believed to correspond to organs and systems in the body, promoting relaxation and well-being.
  • Snehapanam: an internal oleation therapy where medicated ghee or oil is ingested orally. This therapy is used to prepare the body for further detoxification procedures by lubricating the internal organs.
  • Nasyam: administering herbal oils or medicated liquids through the nasal passages. Nasyam is believed to treat disorders of the head and neck region, improve sensory organs' functions, and alleviate respiratory issues.
  • Virachanam (Medicated purgative): a purification therapy that involves administering medicated purgatives to induce controlled purging. This process helps eliminate toxins and balance the body's doshas (energies).
  • Snehavasthi: This is a type of medicated oil enema therapy used for detoxification and rejuvenation. It helps in balancing the body's doshas and promoting overall well-being.
  • Dhara: Dhara is a therapeutic procedure that involves pouring medicated liquids such as herbal oils, milk, or buttermilk in a continuous stream over the forehead. It is known to induce deep relaxation and balance the mind and body.
  • Pizhichil: Also known as "Thailadhara," it involves pouring warm medicated oil over the body while simultaneously massaging it. This therapy is highly rejuvenating, promotes relaxation, and helps in alleviating various ailments.
  • Njavarakizhi: boluses made of cooked rice, herbs, and milk are tied in muslin bags and dipped in warm medicated oil. These boluses are then massaged over the body, promoting muscle strength, improving circulation, and relieving pain.
  • Karnapooranam: the application of medicated oils or herbal extracts into the ears. This therapy is believed to improve hearing, alleviate ear-related issues, and promote overall ear health.
  • Tharpanam: an eye-cleansing therapy that involves pouring medicated liquids or ghee over the eyes. It is beneficial for various eye disorders, dryness, and fatigue, promoting eye health.
  • Sirovasthi: a therapeutic procedure where a cap-like structure is placed on the head, and medicated oils are poured and retained within it for a specific duration. It is beneficial for neurological disorders, headaches, and promoting mental clarity.
  • Steam Bath: exposing the body to steam generated from boiled herbs and water. It helps in opening up pores, detoxifying the body, improving circulation, and promoting relaxation.
  • Internal Herbal Medicines: prescribed orally to address specific health issues, balance the doshas, and support overall well-being. The herbs used are carefully selected based on individual needs and health conditions.

Most of the herbs used in the medicine, tonics and meals at our Ayurvedic Resort are grown in their own gardens and are completely organic, and free of chemicals.
