Celebrate the Winter Solstice

5pm Mulled wine on arrival • 5.30pm Solstice Meditation  • 6.15pm Havan Fire Ceremony • 7pm Community Dinner, Conversation and Cacao aroudn the fire (or indoors!)

Saturday 20 June 5pm–8pm The Winter Solstice marks the longest night and the turning point of the year. For many cultures across time it has been a moment to gather around the fire, share stories, reflect on the path behind us, and welcome the light which gradually returns.

For me, the Winter Solstice feels more like New Year's Eve than January. A threshold between what has been and what will be. It is a pause in the momentum of life and an opportunity to become still enough to hear the quiet wisdom of the heart.

This year we gather at Kookaburra Yoga for an evening of meditation, mantra, sacred fire ceremony and community connection on the eve of the solstice.

As darkness settles over the forest, we will sit together around the fire, reflecting on the cycles of life and nature while enjoying non-alcoholic mulled and spiced wine. Through meditation and intention setting we acknowledge what has passed, honour what is present, and open ourselves to what is emerging.

Following the fire ceremony and meditation, we will share a warming community meal of homemade soup and bread before gathering once more for warming cacao and conversation around the fire.

Life moves quickly. Many of us spend our days moving between responsibilities, obligations and screens. Genuine places of community have become increasingly rare. Kookaburra Yoga has always been more than a place to attend a class. It is a place to pause, to connect, to be yourself and to feel at home.

As we gather on the longest night of the year, we remember what nature continually teaches us: everything changes. We play and celebrate in the Summer. Leaves fall and return to the earth in the Autumn. Winter invites rest and stillness. Spring brings renewal, and gradually the light returns. Year after year the great cycles continue, reminding us that endings and beginnings are part of the same unfolding movement of life.

Whether you come alone or with friends, you are warmly welcome. There is comfort in belonging to these ancient rhythms.

I hope you can join us.

Throughout nature, transformation occurs through heat, light and time.
The havan mirrors this process. Gathering around the fire, we contemplate the continual movement of life itself: creation and dissolution, loss and renewal, darkness and light. Accompanied by the ancient prayer Asato Mā Sad Gamaya, the ceremony becomes a meditation on what is true, enduring and essential amidst the changing seasons of our lives.

from darkness to light

As the sun reaches its furthest point from us and the longest night unfolds, we gather around the fire with one of the most beautiful peace prayers of the Upanisads:

Asato ma sad gamaya
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya
Mrrtyor ma amrrtam gamaya

Lead me from the unreal to the Real.
From darkness to light.
From mortality to immortality.

This is the prayer of every human life.

To see clearly where we have been living from habit, fear or illusion. To turn toward what is true. To move toward greater understanding. To remember what is enduring beneath the changing circumstances of life.

The Winter Solstice invites this reflection naturally. We look back. We look forward. We sit quietly with the mystery of life and our place within it

The fire becomes a symbol of transformation, illuminating what is ready to be released and what wishes to emerge. Together we honour the darkness, welcome the returning light, and step consciously into a new cycle.
