about our yoga classes

a modern approach to yoga honouring the ancient traditions and eternal philosophies

Picture
Kookaburra Yoga's integrated system of Hatha and Raja Yoga is called 'the Hatha Yoga Method (HYM)', and is holistic and comprehensive to ensure every class and program taught by our teachers, here at Kookaburra Creek and around the world, is beneficial on every level of being. The Hatha Yoga Method honours the traditional teachings and philosophies which modern yoga is based upon, along with an intelligent, adaptive and personalised approach so the yoga we share is relevant, accessible and safe for all levels of practitioners.

the yoga of self-mastery

Yoga is an ancient tradition with roots in India, developed as a path of self-understanding and wellbeing that encompasses body, breath, mind, senses, emotion, and consciousness. At Kookaburra Yoga, classes are grounded in these traditional foundations, with a particular emphasis on Hatha Yoga as a complete system of practice.

Hatha Yoga is one of the oldest documented systems of self-mastery, with texts emerging around the 14th century and drawing on earlier Tantric and Raja Yoga traditions. From its origins, Hatha Yoga has been a spiritual path, concerned with how we live, relate, work, feel, think, and understand ourselves within the world.

As a holistic system, Hatha Yoga includes asana (movement and postures), pranayama (breath practices), pratyahara (inner awareness), dharana and dhyana (meditative techniques), mudra (seals), bandha (energetic locks), kriya (cleansing practices), nada (sound), and bhava (focused intention). Within each of these categories are many techniques, traditionally taught progressively and with care under the guidance of experienced teachers.

A central principle of Hatha Yoga is the balancing of innate solar and lunar energies, cultivating steadiness, clarity, and equanimity. Practices support purification of body and mind, allowing vitality, sensitivity, and inner quiet to emerge. Through this process, attention naturally turns inward, beyond habitual thought patterns, and towards a deeper intelligence that guides insight, discernment and inner peace.

Modern yoga has its roots in these early traditions. Many of the practices taught at Kookaburra Yoga are drawn directly from this lineage, adapted with sensitivity to contemporary life while remaining true to their original intent. Classes support strength, mobility, nervous system balance, and inner steadiness, while inviting students into a more intimate relationship with breath, sensation, and awareness.

Classes are taught by experienced teachers with long-term personal practice and ongoing study. Teaching is shaped by lived experience, care for safety, respect for individual bodies and life circumstances. Students are encouraged to progress gradually, developing self-trust and discernment over time.

Our studio is a purpose-built space set within bushland in the Perth Hills. The natural environment is a quiet, grounding sanctuary, supporting reflection, restoration and embodied awareness.

Students are welcome to begin wherever they are, and to allow practice to unfold in its own time.
what you experience in classes
While each class and teacher offers a distinct emphasis, practices at Kookaburra Yoga are informed by the traditional foundations of Hatha Yoga and related meditative traditions. Within classes, students may experience:

• Asana (postures and mindful movement) to support strength, mobility, and ease
• Pranayama (breath practices) to steady the nervous system and refine awareness
• Pratyahara (turning attention inward) through sensory awareness and quiet focus
• Meditative practices including dharana and dhyana, cultivating clarity and presence
• Mudra and bandha to support energetic stability and embodied attention
• Sound and nada through mantra, vibration, or sound-based practices
• Bhava (focused intention) which shapes the inner quality of practice

These elements are offered progressively and with care, shaped by the class style, the teacher, and the needs of those present.

class descriptions

All classes at Kookaburra Yoga follow a shared rhythm which supports steadiness, depth, and inner connection. Sessions typically include an opening orientation or short reflection, gentle chanting or sound, breath awareness, preparatory movement, carefully sequenced yoga forms, and time to settle into rest and integration.

While the structure is consistent, the emphasis, pacing, and tone vary according to the class and teacher. Throughout the week, classes offer space to cultivate presence, clarity, strength, ease, and a felt connection to the deeper dimensions of yoga.

Restorative Yoga
A deeply nourishing class centred on rest, restoration, and nervous system settling. Shapes are supported with props and held for extended periods, allowing the body to soften without effort. Breath awareness, quiet sound, and gentle inner focus support release and integration. This class offers a refuge during times of fatigue, stress, emotional intensity, or transition, and supports a gradual return to balance.

Hatha Yoga
A steady and grounded class rooted in the classical foundations of Hatha Yoga. Movement is explored with attention to breath, alignment, and inner sensation, supporting strength, stability, and clarity. Alongside physical forms, emphasis is placed on cultivating awareness and balance, inviting a calm and attentive relationship with body and mind. This class suits students seeking depth, continuity, and a reflective approach.

Gentle Hatha Yoga
A softer and slower expression of Hatha Yoga, guided with care and spacious pacing. Movement supports joint health, mobility, and ease, with sensitivity to individual bodies and life stages. Breath and awareness remain central, encouraging a gentle unfolding of strength and confidence while maintaining inner quiet.

Beginners Yoga
A welcoming introduction to yoga, offering clear guidance through foundational shapes, breath awareness, and basic principles of alignment and attention. Classes are paced to support understanding and confidence, allowing students to feel at ease while gradually becoming familiar with the language and rhythm of yoga.

Beginners Meditation
An accessible introduction to meditation, guided with simplicity and care. Sessions explore breath awareness, gentle concentration, and guided inner reflection. The emphasis is on cultivating steadiness and clarity in a way that feels grounded and sustainable, supporting meditation as a natural part of daily life.

Yin Yoga
A quiet and contemplative class which works deeply with the connective tissues of the body. Shapes are held for longer periods, inviting stillness, sensation and attentive presence. This class supports deep release, emotional balance, and inner spaciousness, offering a gentle counterbalance to more dynamic forms of movement.

Hatha Vinyasa Yoga
A flowing and rhythmic class linking breath and movement through carefully sequenced forms. Strength, mobility, and continuity are balanced with moments of pause and inward attention. The experience carries a meditative quality, supporting vitality while remaining grounded and centred.

Yin Yoga & Yoga Nidra
This Sunday evening session begins with one hour of gentle Yin Yoga, guiding the body into stillness through long-held, supported shapes. Movement is slow and attentive, supporting ease, breath awareness, and inner settling. The Yin sequence is followed by a 20-minute guided Yoga Nidra, allowing the nervous system to soften and integrate. Together, these elements offer a grounded transition into deep rest and inner quiet, creating a nourishing close to the week.

Sacred Sound Journey
A sound-based experience guided by live instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, chimes, voice and other resonant tones. The body rests while sound becomes the primary focus, inviting deep listening, emotional settling, and subtle awareness. This session supports integration, spaciousness, and clarity, offering a quiet and restorative way to conclude the weekend.

You can attend both sessions on the same evening. Together they form a deeply immersive experience, moving from embodied stillness into sound-led rest, while each class remains complete and meaningful on its own.

Small Group Yoga (Semi-Private)
This is a semi-private class limited to 5 students, where each person follows their own personalised sequence within a shared space. Rather than moving together as a group, students are guided individually, allowing teaching to respond precisely to personal needs, capacity, and intention. Sessions may include tailored movement, breath work, and specific guidance, with close observation and hands-on assistance where appropriate. This format suits students recovering from injury, those new to yoga, or anyone seeking a more individualised and attentive experience. Teaching is informed by therapeutic bodywork, supporting safety, confidence, and ease.

* this class is offered at a different rate and sits outside standard memberships. To join semi-private classes, you must first have a private session. Click here for details

Soma Healing Yoga
A nourishing and restorative evening offered to calm, rebalance, and gently bring lightness and calmness to the body, mind, heart, and spirit. Soma refers to the lunar – receptive qualities of softness, calmness and reflectiveness.

The session begins with warming cacao to support settling and presence, followed by centring meditation, mantra, breath awareness, and slow somatic movement drawn from traditional yoga. Extended guided relaxation allows the nervous system to soften and release.

Sacred sounds are woven throughout using traditional instruments such as gongs, singing bowls, drums, and chimes, chosen for their calming and harmonising qualities. The experience concludes with candlelight meditation and a closing invocation.
Soma Healing Yoga supports release of tension in the physical and subtle body, balances breath and mood, and invites clarity, healing, and inner steadiness.

* a different rate applies to Soma Healing Yoga. This class is included in the Unlimited Membership, but sits outside the other membership options.

our yoga events
Picture
Alongside weekly classes, Kookaburra Yoga hosts a small and carefully curated program of circles, gatherings, and special events. These offerings create space for shared presence, reflection, creativity, and connection, drawing on yogic, contemplative, and community-based traditions.

Friday mornings are dedicated to intimate circle gatherings held from 10am–12pm. Circles include monthly Shakti Women’s Circle, Circle of Elders, Yoga Ecology, and the Temple Circle. Each offers a distinct focus, while sharing a common intention of listening, embodiment, and meaningful connection. Participants are invited to bring lunch to share.

Friday evenings feature guest-led events facilitated by musicians, artists, writers, and teachers from diverse creative and contemplative fields. Events across 2026 will include live music, kirtan and devotional singing, poetry and listening nights, lectures, yogic dance, and other one-off offerings that invite reflection and shared experience.

Throughout the year, Kookaburra Yoga also hosts seasonal celebrations, solstice and equinox gatherings, retreats, and special immersive events. These occasions honour the natural cycles, mark transitions, and offer opportunities to gather with intention and reverence.

Events are open to all, and no prior experience is required. Each gathering is offered as an invitation to step into community, creativity, and the deeper currents of yoga and contemplative life.

Current and upcoming events are listed on our website under the events and workshops tab and shared through our newsletter and social channels.
