About the Devotion Retreat
Experience the devotional practices of yoga and meditation in a sanctuary of nature and peace. This retreat falls during Navaratri (9 Nights of the Goddess Festival) and is a rare opportunity to experience a profoundly spiritual program of yoga incorporating a powerfully transformative Goddess Puja and Vedic Fire Ceremony with Nada Yoga (the yoga of sound which integrates beautiful, hypnotic mantra with live meditative music).

During this retreat, we awaken a feeling of bhakti, devotion, within our own hearts through mantra, movement, ritual and music. We evoke our own Ishta-devata - a form of the Divine unique to each of us, which you can relate to - whether that is a god, goddess, deity or saint, the beauty of nature, the sun or the moon, or simply the eternal ever-present ever-supportive Divine inner self. And then comes the feeling that you are not alone, you are never alone. The invisible force that guides the stars guides you also.

What is in the way of your happiness and fulfilment? Much of our unhappiness has its roots within - in the beliefs, memories and fears, both conscious and unconscious, which we hold within the cells of the body and which disconnect us from the source of love and joy. There is an opportunity to participate in a powerful Vedic Fire Ceremony to release inner obstacles and burdens into the fire, to heal your heart, to finally be free.

In the stillness of meditation there is a pure knowing - that you are loved, that at your essence you too are pure love and worthy of giving and receiving the gifts of the heart - unconditional love, friendliness, empathy, compassion and healing.

With each healing mantra we let go a little of past hurts and embodied tensions, and hold on instead to the beauty and mystery of these sacred sounds, which are like a beacon guiding us safely across the great ocean of the unconscious mind. We emerge from the depths of meditation reconciled, a little lighter, a little freer to rise into our own power and our capacity to recreate ourselves and our lives according to our values, our desire, our dreams.

After an incredible vegan buffet dinner in our tranquil courtyard food garden and home we return to the candlelit shala for nada yoga sound healing. Interweaving peace mantras with sacred sounds you'll be guided from the world of external sound to the realm of inner sound to the space where sounds and words and dreams first arise. An intuitive guided yoga nidra to dissolve conscious thoughts, feelings and conditioning and to experience the self as divine.

Beautiful, healing, life-giving food is a major component of all Kookaburra Yoga retreats. On this retreat we'll share in a sumptuous, flavoursome vegan (& gluten-free) feast prepared lovingly with much of the produce fresh from our own kitchen garden.

There is the option to stay overnight, staying in a shared room in our beautiful residential spaces including rooms overlooking the forest, a railway carriage or sleeping huts (limited to 10 people). In warmer months, there is also the option to sleep under the stars in your own tent.

"Don't look up to Her only as a mysterious refuge in your hour of distress. Keep in mind, She is always very, very near as the Force that guides your life. She Herself is the supreme refuge of every sentient being. With this conviction proceed. She will take the brunt of your burdens from your shoulders and make them light."

devotion

In a fast paced world, Kookaburra Yoga Retreats are a rare opportunity to pause and reflect on our lives from an inner perspective, to put forward a shared intent for wellbeing and healing for ourselves, humanity, this world, and those worlds beyond. When this is consciously shared, the energy and power is amplified.

This special Devotion evening program includes yoga, meditation, a traditional Havan under the setting sun and rising moon (Vedic fire ceremony for releasing past hurts and karma) and puja, followed by a sumptuous celebratory dinner. Back in our beautiful candlelit shala we'll formulate our individual and shared intentions for healing and life-purpose which are interwoven into our session of yogic sound healing and yoga nidra. You'll be lulled into a relaxed state of bliss with sacred instruments including crystal bowls, chimes, gongs, the sitar and more. You'll be guided in a deeply healing meditation to embed your intentions through the layers of body, mind, emotions and soul.

Overnight Option
There is the option to stay overnight, staying in a shared room in our beautiful residential retreat centre, railway carriage or sleeping huts (limited to 10 people) or in warmer months camping under the stars in your own tent (limited to 10 tents). havan
The Havan is a specific process aimed at refinement of the subtle energy existing in matter incorporating the power and intent of specific Vedic mantras to bring about purification and healing of not only the individuals in attendance but also the environment. Rituals such as the Havan provide us with the opportunity to reflect upon life, cultivate and express gratitude, release past hurts we may be holding onto and inner obstacles to our happiness and fulfilment. Only then are we free to move forwards with a clear, unburdened heart.
nada yoga
In the Vedic tradition, sound vibration is known as Nada. In the practice of Nada Yoga, sound is used to restore physical and mental well-being and  as a path to spiritual awakening.
Nada Yoga divides sound into external sounds, Ahata, and internal sounds, Anahata. Using traditional sacred mantras and instruments such as the sitar, gongs, crystal and metal singing bowls, the intuitive arrangement of harmonious sounds transports you deeply inward to experience the peaceful state beyond the body and mind.

connection • ceremony • celebration

Small rituals such as the Havan and Puja woven into the tapestry of our lives are a portal to the spiritual, connecting to the divine through prayer and universal mantras for peace, healing and success. We remember, and even our cells remember, the simplicity, beauty and freedom of a still mind and awakened spirit.

Incredible location

Kookaburra Creek is an astoundingly beautiful 10 acre property in the Perth hills, only 40 minutes from the CBD and Fremantle. It has abundance of native flora and fauna and is preserved as a sanctuary. The usual noises of life, and even those of your own mind, recede as the sounds of nature soothe the senses, transporting you to an inner world where silence and stillness become possible and healing occurs.

Beautiful & serene venue

Kookaburra Creek is a spectacular natural wood octagonal building, built in the shape of a yantra, designed in accordance with Vastu Shastra - the traditional Indian system of space and building design which integrates built spaces and nature to ensure harmony and the flow of positive energy. Kookaburra Creek is a comfortable, air-conditioned and spacious fully equipped studio.

Making yoga alive and real

The Kookaburra Yoga retreat program brings the history, philosophy and practices of yoga to life. We have an idea in our mind about what yoga is and even what life is, when in fact this is often a dream. The sages, rishis and deities are our alarm clocks - waking us from this this living dream. When you awaken and realise the true nature of things, life takes on a new perspective - infused with light and love. This is the blessing and beauty of a spiritual retreat.

Wisdom and learning

Our retreats draw on the vast and profound teachings of traditional yoga which we subtly and gently interweave throughout the program, providing you with opportunities to explore and understand your own inner world and experience of life within a yogic context. There is much beauty and potency in the ancient practices of yoga much needed to counteract the harshness of  life.

Hatha Yoga

Kookaburra Yoga's integrated system of Hatha and Raja Yoga includes practices which are holistic and beneficial on every level of being. Asanas are of 4 types: those which bring inner quiet; those which bring focus and body awareness; those which bring humility and detachment; and those which increase confidence and vitality. Inspired by the great masters of traditional yoga these practices restore internal balance leading to enhanced wellbeing and  calm.

Pranayama

Deep and powerful yogic breathing practices using subtle sound and breath to awaken and direct and innate life force and balance the body’s energies. These pranayama techniques are rarely taught and lead to a transcendent and blissful state of body and mind, preparing the practitioner for an immersive meditation experience.

Meditation

The deeper meditative practices of Raja Yoga lead us to the state of silent meditation and perfect stillness of body, mind and soul. Using effective and easy to master techniques we bring steadiness to the mind and control to the flow of thoughts. It is within the silence and stillness that healing and self-realisation occur.

Yogic Sound Healing

In the Vedic tradition, sound vibration is known as Nada. In the practice of Nada Yoga, sound is used to restore physical and mental well-being and  as a path to spiritual awakening.
Using traditional sacred instruments such as the sitar, gongs, crystal and metal singing bowls, the intuitive arrangement of harmonious sounds transports you deeply inward to experience the peaceful state beyond the body and mind.

Yoga Nidra

You'll be guided to journey inwards, to attune to your inner world of thought, inner sensation, inner space, allowing deep held stresses and tensions to emerge and be released. With your focus at your centre of peace, the mind becomes clear and calm, there is relief as you shed the weight of the world and allow the process of healing to unfold.

Attune to Nature

If the weather is agreeable, we walk outdoors in the bush on the grounds of Kookaburra Creek to meditate amongst the trees or by the meandering stream to absorb the healing benefits of being still and calm in a pristine natural environment. Attuning to the natural world, we bring our own body into rhythm and balance.

Antar Mouna

Mouna is sacred inner silence. We counterbalance physical, mental and spiritual activity with silence at times during the day where we withdraw our attention from the outer world to reflect inwardly. Without the need for communication we more fully experience the present moment, cultivating an inner quiet which replenishes our energy and deepens our presence and awareness.

Food for your soul

Food on this retreat is sattvic - meaning it brings peace and enhances the wellbeing of the body, mind and spirit. Retreat food is colourful, beautiful in flavour and aesthetic appeal and plentiful! All food is plant-based, gluten-free, predominantly organic, using ingredients fresh from the Kookaburra kitchen garden. We believe food should be sustainable, pure and real - supporting your body to heal.

It's difficult to put into words how magical this place really is. From your first visit you feel welcome and safe in the beautiful yurt. Mandy and Robert are such warm and welcoming people and their extensive knowledge of yoga has helped me no end. I recently attended the one day silent retreat, it was a beautiful day of healing. The yoga session in the morning was enjoyable, I loved the meditation by the creek and the food was delicious! I thoroughly recommend Kookaburra yoga for anyone trying to heal or find themselves you are in the very best hands. It is definitely my favourite place to chill!

My first time to Kookaburra creek yoga for the Sound Silence Stillness yoga and meditation retreat. It was amazing! I've done yoga for a long time but have never been taught meditation before, and wanted to start learning and this day was perfect. The sound healing session was amazing, and the day also includes a lovely morning tea and lunch, in beautiful tranquil surroundings. I can't wait to go back!
